Chiropractic is a healthcare discipline that is concerned with the preservation and restoration of health by allowing the inherent recuperative power of the body to heal itself. In order to achieve this, particular attention must be given to the subluxation. The World Health Organization defines a subluxation as “a lesion or dysfunction in a joint or motion segment in which alignment, movement integrity, and/or physiological function are altered, although contact between joint surfaces remain intact. It is essentially a functional entity which may influence biomechanical and neural integrity.” In more simple terms, when our spine is out of alignment research shows it can negatively impact the nervous system. As our nervous system controls and coordinates every function in the body, a subluxation can lead to a number of health issues. Subluxations can manifest as pain, and they can also lead to a variety of other ailments. This is because the nerves that pass through the spinal bones innervate virtually every organ and cell in our bodies. Research also shows that only a small amount of pressure (like the weight of a dime) on spinal nerves can have a profound impact on the function of the nerves.

Primary Subluxation

There are three kinds of subluxations: Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary. The Primary Subluxation occurs when the body usually cannot self-correct because it is so overwhelming. This particular subluxation has three causes: chemical, mental, and physical. Secondary and Tertiary Subluxations are also known as "compensatory subluxations" because they occur as an adaptation or response to the Primary Subluxation. The majority of Primary Subluxations are pain and symptom-free, therefore, if pain is present, the cause is almost never due to the Primary Subluxation, rather, it is due to the Secondary or Tertiary ones. Once the Primary Subluxation has been corrected, the compensatory subluxations will abate.

Chiropractic Adjustment

A specific, gentle, non-invasive, quick impulse delivered by an instrument called the Integrator. The purpose of an adjustment is to remove nerve interference caused by a subluxation, allowing your body to function better. The principle of chiropractic uses the Quantum Physics Paradigm: an adjustment is communication through touch, between the chiropractor's intelligence and the patient's innate intelligence, using the nervous system as a medium. Vitalism is a principle that recognizes and respects all forms of life in this universe are conscious, self-developing, self-maintaining, and self-healing. To embrace a vitalistic lifestyle is to trust the processes of the body and its healing abilities, and to make conscious health choices from this basis. This principle and lifestyle is in opposition to the reductionist, mechanistic model that is typical of the western world. The concept of vitalism is not new. It has a long history that was marginalized during the scientific revolution (early 20th century), but has recently gained favorable attention from academics, philosophers, and clinicians due to new the perspective quantum mechanics has given us on topics related to space, time, and healing. And while chiropractic’s major premise is vitalism, we recognize that this principle is greater than any one profession.
